The Methodist Circuit of Yonge Street first included Newmarket in 1824 with worshippers meeting in houses. A temporary chapel was built in 1827, and in 1840 a permanent church and a school were erected on Prospect Avenue. The present church building which dates from 1879 was enlarged and renovated several times during the 20th Century. In 1925 Methodists joined with Presbyterians and Congregationalists and formed the United Church of Canada. Trinity United Church today is a vibrant community that worships and serves God. We have a mission to help our generation know God as Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit (read our statement of faith). We warmly invite you to join us as we carry this ministry forward in the 21st century. The United Church of Canada is unique among denominations in that it is the result of a "coming together" of Christian churches rather that a "splitting apart" which is too often the case. Union negotiations among several denominations began in Canada in the late 19th Century. Then, on June 10, 1925, in Toronto, Ontario, the United Church of Canada was inaugurated when the Methodist Church of Canada, the Congregational Union of Canada, and 70 per cent of the Presbyterian Church in Canada entered into an organic union. Joining as well was the small General Council of Union Churches, centred largely in Western Canada. The Twenty-second General Council of The United Church of Canada (1966) approved the Plan of Union whereby the Canada Conference of The Evangelical United Brethren Church became part of the United Church of Canada, effective January 1st, 1968. In addition, over the years various individual congregations from other Christian communions have joined the United Church. Throughout the world other churches have used the example of the United Church of Canada as they, too, have come together for a common purpose. |
